New Delhi: More than a decade after the 2012 Nirbhaya case forced India into a national reckoning on women's safety, the country's struggle with gender-based violence continues to remain a pressing concern. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), India recorded 4,48,211 crimes against women in 2023, compared to nearly 2.44 lakh cases in 2012—an increase of over 80 percent. While stronger reporting mechanisms and increased awareness have contributed to this rise, the numbers also underline an uncomfortable reality: laws alone cannot eliminate violence if the attitudes that enable it remain unchanged.

Behind every disturbing headline lies a deeper social question. Before a woman experiences physical violence, she often encounters everyday disrespect—in language, stereotypes, objectification, unequal upbringing, and behaviours that society has long dismissed as harmless. If India is to build a safer future for women, the conversation must move beyond reacting to crimes and begin examining the mindset that precedes them.

It is this conviction that has inspired The SuperWomaniya Show with Nonstop Niki, a nationally broadcast radio programme on Fever FM, to launch Superwomaniya Safety Squad – Awareness Se Action Tak, a nationwide public awareness initiative that seeks to transform conversations around women's safety into collective action.

Broadcast every Monday to Friday from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, The SuperWomaniya Show has consistently advocated women's leadership, celebrated achievements, and addressed issues that shape their lives. Through the Safety Squad campaign, the show is expanding that commitment by encouraging conversations around respect, consent, accountability, language, and mindset change.

Through the campaign, RJ Nikki, who is leading the campaign, is urging the public to start much earlier—at home, in conversations, in the way people raise children, and in everyday language. Awareness is important, but awareness must lead to action.

"Safety is not a privilege; it’s every woman’s right. Every woman deserves to step out with confidence, not caution. So, let’s stop talking about change and start becoming the reason she feels safe. Through the Superwomaniya Safety Squad, we’re turning awareness into action—because women’s safety is everyone’s responsibility.”

- RJ Nikki, lead host, Superwomaniya Show, Fever FM

The campaign, in association with PARI Foundation (People Against Rapes in India) by Yogita Bhayana, an organization that has been working extensively on issues of women's safety, legal awareness, victim support, and public advocacy, aims to stir a collective responsibility towards creating safer spaces for women through expert-led conversations, community engagement, digital storytelling, and citizen participation.

Beyond Crime, Towards Change

For years, discussions around women's safety have centred almost entirely on crimes after they occur. Public attention typically focuses on punishment, policing, and legal reform. While these remain essential, Superwomaniya Safety Squad asks a different question:

What are the everyday attitudes that make disrespect and violence possible in the first place?

The campaign argues that safer societies are not built solely through stronger laws. They are built through everyday values—how boys and girls are raised, how women are spoken about, how consent is understood, how boundaries are respected, and how communities respond to misogyny when they encounter it.

At the heart of the initiative are four simple but 4 powerful pillars:
#TalkToYourSon
#SayNoToSlangs
#ChangeTheMindset
#RespectBeginsAtHome

These are more than campaign slogans. They are invitations to examine behaviours that have become so normalised that they often escape scrutiny.

Why #SayNoToSlangs Matters

One of the campaign's most powerful conversations revolves around language.

Across homes, schools, colleges, workplaces, sports fields, entertainment platforms, and even popular culture, abusive language directed at women has become deeply embedded in everyday communication. Derogatory slangs involving women are casually used to express anger, humour, frustration, or dominance, often without recognising the attitudes they reinforce.

The campaign argues that language is never "just words." It reflects society's mindset. The words people repeatedly hear, laugh at, and normalise gradually influence perception. Perception shapes behaviour, and behaviour ultimately shapes culture. Rejecting misogynistic slurs may appear to be a small step, but cultural change often begins with everyday choices.

#TalkToYourSon: Changing the Conversation at Home

While girls across India continue to be taught how to protect themselves, the campaign asks an equally important question: Are we teaching boys how to respect others?

Children begin learning ideas about gender, relationships, dignity, and equality long before they enter workplaces or public life. Families therefore play a critical role in shaping attitudes.

Artist Rahul Ram reflects on this very idea, reminding audiences that respect is first learned at home. The values children witness within their families often become the values they carry into society.

Through #TalkToYourSon, the campaign encourages parents to engage boys in conversations about consent, emotional intelligence, empathy, healthy masculinity, personal boundaries, and mutual respect.

Women's safety, the campaign believes, cannot be achieved simply by teaching girls to be cautious. It requires raising boys who understand that respect is non-negotiable.

A Collective Responsibility

The Safety Squad initiative is built around a simple but powerful belief: Women's safety is not a women's issue. It is society's responsibility.

"Let's build a society where respect becomes a habit, not an exception. Every woman deserves to live without fear. Be the change. Be the Safety Squad."

Yogita Bhayana, Founder -PARI

A Movement, Not Merely a Campaign

Superwomaniya Safety Squad is designed as a participative social movement rather than a one-way awareness drive.

Through radio conversations, digital storytelling, expert interviews, public interactions, legal awareness sessions, community engagement, and citizen participation, the campaign seeks to create sustained conversations around respect, accountability, and behavioural change.

Yashovardhan Azad

Former IPS officer Yashovardhan Azad, mentor of PARI Foundation, observes,

"A safe society is built not only through laws but through responsible citizens. Prevention begins with awareness, courage, and collective action. Women's safety is strengthened when communities stand together."

Its digital series features conversations with activists, legal experts, educators, professionals, artists, and members of the public, exploring issues ranging from workplace safety and consent to legal rights, family values, and changing social attitudes.

The initiative invites every citizen to become part of this movement by beginning conversations at home, challenging misogynistic language and stereotypes, speaking up against discrimination, supporting survivors, and creating safer environments in homes, schools, workplaces, and communities.

Because every act of respect matters.

Every conversation matters.
Every parent matters.
Every citizen matters.

Women's safety does not begin when a crime is reported. It begins much earlier—with the values we teach, the language we choose, and the mindset we collectively decide to change.
